Garlic is a species of bulbous flowering plant in the genus Allium family, which is a genus of monocotyledonous flowering plants that includes hundreds of species, including the cultivated onion, garlic, scallion, shallot, leek, and chives. Allium (a generic name) is the Latin word for garlic, and the type species for the genus is Allium sativum which means “cultivated garlic.”

Garlic has a pungent heavy smell and taste. Garlic’s flavor mellows and sweetens when cooked.

Garlic can be grown year-round in mild climates using loose and dry soil in more sunny areas and is often asexually cultivated. The use of high organic soil materials produces quality garlic.
