In the United States and Canada, pickled cucumber is considered a pickle. In Britain, Ireland, Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand, pickled cucumbers are called gherkins.

How to make pickles at home.

A simple recipe to make pickles at home include:

  • 1 pound cucumbers
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cup white vinegar
  • 1-tablespoon salt
  • 2-cloves garlic, peeled and smashed
  • 1-teaspoon dill seed

Preparation:

  1. Wash cucumbers.
  2. Slice cucumbers into rounds or spears.
  3. Boil a combination of water, vinegar, salt, garlic, and dill seed.
  4. Pack cucumbers into a jar.
  5. Pour the hot liguid over the cucumbers.
  6. Let cool to room-temperature.
  7. Cover and refrigerate for at least 24-hours before serving.

Add mustard seeds or red pepper flakes to the brine for extra flavor.
