When baking cakes or bread, baking powder is an essential leavening agent in creating lighter cakes that aren’t overly dense. Baking powder opens up the crumb of a cake to cook a fluffier and less dense cake.

Baking powder and yeast are both leavening agents. However, they work differently. Baking powder works instantly, were yeast takes time to rise.

Clabber Girl, originally owned and manufactured by Hulman & Company, sold the American brand baking powder, baking soda, and corn starch to B&G Foods in 2019.

The brand Clabber Girl originated from the word Clabber, a type of sour milk. In the early 1800s, people mixed Clabber (sour milk) with pearl ash, soda, and cream of tartar with a few other ingredients to make what is known today as baking powder.
